The ancient Son Tay is located between Ha Tay town, distance center of Hanoi than 40km. This is an ancient military architecture, was built in the reign of King Minh Mang in 1822.

In 1461, King Le Thanh Tong, administrative units, "Son Tay" was officially born. Initially based in the La Pham town of Tien Phong commune, Quang Oai office (now in Tan Hong commune, Ba Vi district).

By the reign of King Le Canh Hung (1740-1786), by establishing foot of water to move the town offices on the higher ground, there are many gentle hilly territory of the village of Mong Phu, Cam Gia, Phuc Loc district, Quoc Oai office (now in Duong Lam commune, Son Tay town).

Until the third of Minh Mang (1822) new town on the territory of the commune Mai Trai, Pure Art, Minh Nghia district (later known as the Tung Thien), is the Son Tay town center today.

Over time, many works of the old capital town was devastated, with only relics of the ancient Son Tay ancient citadel in the middle of town today, was built in 1822( Minh Mang of the third).

Old citadel of Son Tay is a military court was built of laterite (a type of building material characteristics of the Son Tay), with overall square shape, each about long 400m, high 5m, built by Vauban style - types of works taken by the military get name Vauban engineer  of French.

Citadel have quadrilateral, trapezoidal cross-sections, sincere 6m wide, 4 meters wide aspects into, there are many holes in the top to the soldiers hiding out in shooting or stabbing spears are long enemy when they climb the walls.

The four main ports: The south gate called Tien gate; the north is the Hau port, the East main and West main.

Vong Lau

Each port on the top is guard floor (Vietnamese call Vong Lau) and only one entrance, the outside is covered Duong Ma Thanh (also known as fish bearing) the cone shape of the outer barrier.

Around the outer moat and deep 3m, wide 20m, long 1.795m, is connected to the Tich river in the southwest corner.

The outer ring is far from La Thanh (the citadel outside) is covered by land high 3.5m, pentagon, external spines dense bamboo cover. The four external ports also open look to the four directions: East, West, South, North, now called La Thanh street.

Vong Cung

In the citadel, the important works are built on the symmetry center axis North-South. The middle is the "Vong Cung Nu" to the south, where take a rest of the King when going to inspect provinces governed by viceroys each week. Spring and Autumn period, to sacrifice whenever reference only King confer.

Before Kinh Thien palace is a large tiled courtyard, outside the radiation portal is built of brick, bank relief  "Long Van Khanh Hoi" with lime mortar. Next is the "Doan Mon" has three doors, straight into the Ky Dai (flagpole) built on a square base pyramidal laterite about high 18m.

To the west is Vo Mieu, places of worship and the generals had died while bravely fighting to protect citadel. At the four corners of  citadel, the past four wells to the square, built of stone steps down to the bottom of bees, about deep 6 meters, year-round food supply for troops in the townships and people in the citadel.

Besides the mansion and the first line of the Provincial Governor-General (later renamed province chief), provincial treasurer, Commander of a provincial army and provincial education officer.

On the Dong Vong palace is Nguc That (prisons), food store and farm girls - where soldiers wives and children lived.

Approximately 70-80 decades of the 19th century the ancient Son Tay citadel as a defensive center of French resistance against the imperial Nguyen dynasty by Hoang Ke Viem , Luu Vinh Phuc... leadership.

The French were occupied in 1884. In 1924, the Governor of Indochina issued decrees to vestige of this ancient city.

April 12/1946, a meeting of government Democratic Republic of Vietnam has taken place here.

After nearly 200 years, been many wars and devastating time, ancient Son Tay citadel  largely destroyed, leaving only the walls, doors, money, door post, two cannons and some  ruins as Vong Lau, the foundation of Kinh Thien palace, the wells ... In 1994, the ancient citadel Son Tay is the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism) as an historic national architecture.

On 16/2/2009, the Hanoi People's Committee has decided to renovate and embellish the historic culture ancient citadel of Son Tay serve for The 1000 celebration of Thang Long - Hanoi in order to keep a historical monument of cultural values, visitor attractions
